The Holocaust was a theme that I tried to address several times before making this series of altered books and monoprints that I began in 2004. I spent a while in Belgium at an artist residency in 2002. While there, I took photos in the Jewish Quarter of Antwerp, at the Dossin barracks in Mechelen (now a museum) where Jews were held before being sent to concentration camps. Later I went to the Mauthausen Concentration Camp in Austria. I used this visual material in combination with old maps and fragments of pre-World War II Yiddish children's story. The key to this series became the figure of the Orthodox man on his bicycle. He appears in several of the books and is the source of a stenciled shape I used in a series of monoprints, "The Man in a Hat."
Here's an article about this work when it was exhibited at the College of St. Elizabeth in New Jersey.
